Householders looking to avoid maggots in their bins can use two common kitchen spices as a simple, organic deterrent, according to DIY expert Ken Long. Cayenne pepper and cinnamon, sprinkled at the bottom of a garbage can, can keep flies away and stop them from laying eggs, which could otherwise hatch into maggots within 24 hours.
Expert shares organic tip on TikTok
Ken Long, a home DIY expert, shared his advice with his followers on TikTok. He said: "Nobody likes finding maggots in their garbage can. Here’s a simple organic way to keep the flies away so you don’t have to deal with a nasty clean up. Sprinkle some cayenne pepper and cinnamon at the bottom of your garbage can."
Long explained the science behind the trick: "The capsaicin [chili pepper extract] and cayenne pepper irritates the fly's senses and they hate the smell of cinnamon. This will keep flies away from your garbage and keep them from laying eggs, so you don't have to deal with maggots."
Caution advised when using spices
The Liverpool Echo urged people to exercise caution when using cayenne pepper, as its strong scent may cause sneezing or eye irritation. It suggested sprinkling the spice inside a wheelie bin liner, which should be fastened securely on collection days, to prevent spillage or mess.
Additional tips for fly-free bins
Other ways to keep bins fly and maggot free include frequent cleaning with hot, soapy water or a mild bleach solution. Ensuring bin bags are tightly fastened can eliminate spillages that attract flies, as can keeping the lid firmly shut. These measures, combined with the spice trick, offer a practical approach to avoiding infestations.
