Uber has completed the rollout of a new audio recording feature across the whole of the UK, allowing passengers to record audio throughout their entire journey. The feature, now available to all UK riders, is designed to encourage mutually respectful interactions between riders and drivers, and to provide crucial evidence in the event of a safety-related incident.
Riders can activate audio recording through the Safety Toolkit in the latest version of the Uber app. Once activated, drivers are notified before pick-up that the trip may be recorded. If a rider activates recording for the first time during a trip, future drivers will be notified ahead of subsequent trips. The feature pauses if the rider uses the microphone for phone calls, ensuring the recording captures only the trip audio.
How the Audio Recording Feature Works
Uber, which serves Birmingham, has detailed the functionality on its website. The company states: “Safety is our top priority and we’re committed to building technologies that help make your Uber experience even safer.” The audio recording is intended to “help encourage safe interactions while on a trip, determine what happened, and identify the best response after a safety-related incident.”
Riders can upload the recorded audio file when making a safety report through the app. To access the feature, users tap the blue shield icon to open the Safety Toolkit and select the Record Audio option. The trip audio is stored in the app, and riders can choose to share it with Uber’s safety specialists after the ride has ended.
Availability and Global Expansion
Audio Recording is currently available in more than a dozen countries across Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and selected European markets. The UK rollout completes the feature’s availability across the entire country, marking a significant expansion of Uber’s safety tools.
