Wolverhampton mum stole £40 groceries from One Stop

Joanna Shore, a 40-year-old Wolverhampton woman, has been given a 12-month conditional discharge after admitting to stealing groceries worth £40 from a One Stop store. The theft occurred on the evening of June 11, when Shore entered the shop on Oxley Moor Road and filled a shopping basket with items before leaving without paying.

Shore, of Cherry Tree Lane, Bilbrook, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop during a hearing at Dudley Magistrates' Court on October 8. The court heard that she was identified from CCTV footage after the incident, and no items were recovered.

Details of the theft

John Hopkins, prosecuting, told the court: "She left via the self-service checkout, emptying items from the basket, placing them into a shopping bag and leaving without scanning the items of attempting to pay." He added that Shore was identified from CCTV and that no items were recovered.

The stolen goods, valued at £40, were intended for "self consumption," according to Shore's legal representative. The court was told that Shore, who receives Universal Credit, had "overstretched herself financially that month" and that the incident was "a one-off."

Court outcome and financial penalties

Magistrate Anthony Dubberley imposed a 12-month conditional discharge, telling Shore: "You've never done this before and hopefully you'll never do it again." Shore was also ordered to pay £40 in compensation to the store and a victim surcharge of £26.

The case highlights the financial pressures faced by some residents in the West Midlands, particularly those on benefits. Shore's mitigation focused on her financial difficulties at the time of the offence, describing her as "struggling at the time."

The conditional discharge means Shore will face no further punishment if she stays out of trouble for the next 12 months. The compensation and surcharge payments are due in addition to the discharge, bringing her total financial liability to £66.
