The World Day of Prayer, a unique worldwide movement led by Christian women, is set to travel from Samoa across the globe, with celebrations planned for Hoddesdon and Wormley. This annual ecumenical event involves women from different countries crafting a service that reflects their nation's needs and hopes, and this year, Nigeria takes the spotlight.
Global and Local Organisation
The World Day of Prayer stands out as the only global, women-led, ecumenical group, fostering unity, peace, and mutual support through its motto, 'Informed prayer: Prayerful Action'. The organisation operates through an international committee, European committee, national committees, and regional groups, including a local committee in Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, and Wormley.
On March 6, 2026, the same service, blending singing and reflection, will circle the world in a 38-hour Mexican Wave, engaging churches of all denominations. In Hoddesdon and Wormley, two services are scheduled to bring the community together.
Event Details for Hoddesdon and Wormley
In Hoddesdon, the morning service will be held at Hoddesdon Methodist Church at 11am, followed by lunch. The event will feature the Mayor, Cllr Patsy Spears, and a Nigerian singer, adding a special touch to the celebrations.
In Wormley, the evening service will take place at Wormley Community Centre on Fairfield Drive at 7.30pm, with refreshments provided. Children will perform during the welcome song, and a group of Nigerians from the RCCG Pavilion of Redemption will participate, enhancing the cultural experience.
Community Involvement and Themes
Organisers are inviting other groups to join in, particularly encouraging those of Nigerian descent to get involved. The Nigerian Christian women behind this year's service have reflected on their experiences, emphasising themes of trust in God, unity in Christ, and love through Jesus' message of hope and rest.
