Brownhills Flag Display to be Replaced with Permanent Installation
The patriotic sea of St George's and Union flags that has adorned a busy traffic island in Brownhills since September last year will soon be removed under new proposals from Walsall Council. The display, located along the Chester Road North approach to Miner Island and around the island itself, has been growing steadily but will be taken down to make way for a more structured and lasting tribute.
Council Proposes Permanent Flagpoles and Banners
Walsall Council aims to create a permanent installation featuring three 6-metre flagpoles flying the Union Flag, St George's Cross, and Black Country flag. Additional plans include a crescent of 3-metre flagpoles and 12 street-lighting column banners designed to frame and enhance the display, ensuring it remains a focal point for community pride.
Brownhills residents will be consulted in the coming weeks to gather feedback before the final design is approved. This move is part of broader efforts to maintain and enhance the Miner Statue, locally known as Jigger, which commemorates the town's mining heritage.
Support for Community Pride and Safety
Councillor Adam Hicken, Walsall's portfolio holder for enforcement and safe communities, emphasized the council's role in supporting positive expressions of community pride while ensuring public spaces are safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. He stated, "This proposal creates a managed display that ensures Brownhills can continue to celebrate what makes the town special while addressing the safety and maintenance concerns that have been raised."
In April, trees along the path below the island will be cut back to restore views of the Miner Statue from surrounding areas, further highlighting this important local symbol.
Ward Councillors Back the Plans
Brownhills ward councillors Kerry Murphy, John Murray, and Kenneth Ferguson expressed strong support for the permanent flagpoles, noting their significance in celebrating the town's heritage. They said, "The Miner Statue is an important symbol of Brownhills and the town's proud mining heritage. As ward councillors, we have consistently supported the installation of permanent flagpoles at Miner Island as a positive way to celebrate our town and reflect the strong sense of civic pride within the community."
They added that the proposals offer a more structured and lasting way to celebrate Brownhills, ensuring the area remains safe, well-maintained, and representative of the wider community. With the 20th anniversary of the Miner Statue approaching in May, this initiative provides a valuable opportunity to highlight the town's history and the pride local residents have in Brownhills.
