Scottish £300 heating oil support extended into winter for five groups
£300 heating oil support extended for Scottish households

The Scottish Government has extended its Emergency Heating Oil Scheme beyond the initial six-month period, confirming that £300 payments remain available to households struggling with heating oil and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) costs. The scheme, which opened on 1 April, has already delivered more than 6,700 payments, according to Energy Minister Stephen Gethins.

Extension announced as prices remain volatile

The scheme was introduced to help low-income households cope with higher heating oil and LPG prices, driven by ongoing instability in the Middle East. With prices still fluctuating, the Scottish Government has decided to keep the application window open through the winter and beyond, ensuring those most in need can still apply for support.

Energy Minister Stephen Gethins said: “More than 6,700 payments have been made since the Scottish Government launched this scheme to ensure households with the greatest need could meet the cost of keeping their homes warm.” He added that while prices have fallen since their peak in March, ongoing international uncertainty means further increases cannot be ruled out this winter.

Who can apply for the £300 payment

The scheme, administered by Advice Direct Scotland, provides £300 of support for those struggling with the cost of domestic heating oil and LPG. Payments are made directly to suppliers, where possible, to help qualifying households place an order.

To be eligible, applicants must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Your home is heated by oil or LPG.
  • You pay the fuel bill for your home.
  • The home is your main or only home.
  • You have bought fuel on or after Wednesday 1 April 2026, or you are about to place an order.
  • No one at your address has had an award in the last three months.

Energy efficiency advice also available

Gethins emphasised that fuel cost support is only part of the solution. He encouraged households to speak with Home Energy Scotland’s expert advisers, who provide free, impartial advice on grants, loans and support available to reduce energy use and cut costs. “Whether you are a tenant or a homeowner, now is the perfect time to speak with Home Energy Scotland's expert advisers,” he said.

Beth Mukushi, Head of Programme Delivery at Home Energy Scotland, said: “As the Scottish Government-funded energy advice service, we speak to people in rural homes every day who are looking to make their homes warmer and more energy efficient.” She noted that many households are in off-gas areas, worried about rising energy costs or living in older properties, and that the service can help them take practical steps to reduce energy use and access funding for home improvements.
