Ann Widdecombe Murder: Attack 24 Hours Before Body Found

Detectives have revealed that former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe was assaulted at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, approximately 24 hours before her body was discovered on Thursday, July 9. The 78-year-old former prisons minister sustained serious injuries in the attack, which police now believe occurred around 12:30 PM on Wednesday, July 8.

Suspect Released, Hunt for White Male Continues

A 26-year-old man arrested on Friday, July 10 on suspicion of murder has since been released from custody and is no longer a suspect, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed on Saturday, July 11. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that the investigation is now focused on identifying a white male suspect, though he emphasized there is no wider risk to the public.

“We believe the attack took place on Wednesday, July 8 at around 12.30pm,” Longman said in a statement. “Our inquiries are moving at a pace for a suspect who is believed to be a white male.” The force has previously stated the death is not being treated as terrorism and there is no indication of a politically-motivated crime.

Investigation Details and Public Appeal

Longman urged the public to avoid speculation on social media, which could harm the investigation and cause distress to Widdecombe’s family. “Our priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined,” he added. The police have set up a major incident public portal for submitting information, images, or footage, and anonymous tips can be given to Crimestoppers.

Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP for Maidstone and the Weald from 1987 to 2010 and held ministerial roles under John Major. She later became a Brexit Party MEP and a Reform UK spokeswoman, and gained wider fame through appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
