Legal Notice Issued Over Mice Infestations
Birmingham City Council has been formally ordered to address severe mice infestations in its housing stock following a legal notice from environmental health officers. The notice, issued under the Environmental Protection Act, demands immediate action to resolve the problem that has affected numerous council tenants across the city.
Health and Safety Concerns
The infestations have raised significant health and safety concerns, with tenants reporting mice in kitchens, bedrooms, and living areas. According to the council's own records, there have been over 1,200 reports of mice in council properties in the past year alone. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated: "It's been a nightmare. We've had mice running across our floors at night, and the council hasn't done enough to help."
Council's Response
A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said: "We take our responsibilities to tenants very seriously and are committed to resolving this issue. We have already increased pest control resources and are working closely with affected residents." The council has been given 21 days to comply with the notice or face further legal action.

The infestations have caused distress and health issues for tenants, including asthma attacks and other respiratory problems. Parents have reported that their children are afraid to sleep in their own beds.
