Mum dies after Smethwick crash that killed her toddler

Khushpreet Kaur, the mother whose two-year-old son was killed in a horrific Smethwick crash, has died from the injuries she sustained in the same collision. The 30-year-old had been in a coma and never regained full consciousness after the December 14, 2024 incident.

Crash details and injuries

Mrs Kaur was travelling in a Toyota Auris with her son Shehbaz Singh, his father Amritpal Singh, and two close friends when a stolen Porsche Cayenne driven by Sharjeel Shahzad struck them head-on. Shahzad was on the wrong side of Dartmouth Road, Smethwick, driving at 51mph in a 30mph zone.

Shehbaz died in hospital the same day. Mrs Kaur suffered multiple injuries including skull fractures, leg fractures, a spleen injury, and a traumatic brain injury. She was moved to Amberley Court care home in Balsall Heath for specialist care.

Death and inquest findings

Mrs Kaur died on March 22 this year after falling ill with vomiting and diarrhoea, leading to aspiration and respiratory distress. She was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital but did not recover. Area Coroner Adam Hodson recorded the cause of death as acute aspiration/inhalational pneumonitis resulting from a historical traumatic brain injury sustained in the crash.

"Mrs Kaur sustained multiple injuries - including skull fractures; leg fractures; an injury to her spleen; and a traumatic brain injury - and sadly never fully regained consciousness following the collision," wrote Mr Hodson. "As a consequence, she required specialist care with all activities of daily living and subsequently resided at Amberley Court care home."

He added: "She was vulnerable to aspiration due to her altered consciousness level, as a consequence of the traumatic brain injury she sustained in the road traffic collision."

Driver sentenced

Sharjeel Shahzad, 30, admitted causing death by dangerous driving, two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving with no insurance, and failing to stop after a collision. In July 2025, he was sentenced to 15 years and four months in prison and banned from driving for 18 years and three months.
