Researchers at MoneySuperMarket have named Telford and Wrekin the best place to raise a family in England. The modern town, which is a direct 35-minute train ride from Birmingham New Street, scored top marks for its plentiful green spaces and above-average childcare affordability.
What the study measured
The study scored local authorities across several key factors: housing costs, childcare costs, education, access to healthcare, and road safety. Telford and Wrekin came out ahead of York, Windsor, and Maidenhead in the national ranking.

Affordable housing and commuter links
Housing costs were a major factor in Telford's success. The average house price in the area is £216,685, with average council tax of £2,256 per year. Both figures compared favourably to other areas in the study.
For those working in Birmingham, Telford is highly commutable. The direct train from Telford Central to Birmingham New Street takes just 35 minutes. Driving via the M54 and M6 typically takes around 45 minutes, traffic permitting.
Family attractions and green spaces
Telford Town Park is a major draw for families, featuring a giant adventure playground, a splash pad, a lake, and sand play. Many of the town's family activities are low-cost or free.
The town is also close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge, which is home to numerous museums. Independent shops and cafes add to the appeal, and the scenic River Severn runs nearby for walks.
The famous Wrekin hill is situated just five miles west of the town, at the gateway to the Shropshire Hills. Its location near the Welsh border also makes family holidays convenient, with Welshpool just 45 minutes away.
