Travellers at Sheldon Park for Third Time in 2026

A convoy of caravans has been filmed arriving at Sheldon Country Park in Birmingham, marking the third known illegal encampment at the site this year.

Footage posted on social media on Tuesday evening (May 12) shows a procession of caravans and other vehicles entering the recreation ground off Coventry Road and Horseshoes Lane. Traffic was seen waiting as the convoy made its way onto the park.

The Friends of Sheldon Country Park confirmed they had been informed of the incursion. In a Facebook post, the group stated: 'Travellers at Sheldon Country Park. We have just been informed that travellers have arrived once again on the Sheldon Rec side of the park.'

This is the third time in 2026 that travellers have set up an illegal encampment at the park. Previous incidents have prompted responses from Birmingham City Council, which has reiterated its commitment to protecting its land.

The council has previously stated: 'Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it. The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy – and details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website.'

Residents and park users have expressed frustration over the repeated incursions, which have disrupted access to the recreation ground. The council has not yet commented on this latest incident.
