Firefighter's 90th Birthday Surprise: Reunited with Woman He Saved 40 Years Ago
Firefighter, 90, reunited with woman he saved as a baby

A retired firefighter celebrating his 90th birthday was rendered speechless by a surprise guest—a woman whose life he had saved from a blazing house four decades earlier.

A Heroic Act Never Forgotten

The extraordinary reunion took place during a party for Brian Passmore, who served with Lancashire Fire Service. Back in 1986, Brian was part of the crew that responded to a severe house fire. In a heroic act, he personally rescued a baby girl, Carly Holden, from the inferno. Brian often reflected that saving baby Carly was the highlight of his firefighting career, which spanned from January 1962 until he took early retirement in 1988 due to a back injury.

Now a mother-of-five living in Blackpool, Carly had cherished the memory of her rescue her entire life, keeping a memory box filled with newspaper cuttings about the event. Despite this, the pair had never met again—until now.

The Secret Plan for a Milestone Celebration

Brian, who now lives in a care home, believed he was going out for a quiet birthday meal with his daughter, Julie Henderson. Unbeknownst to him, Julie had masterminded an elaborate surprise. After her father mentioned last year, during a period of poor health, that he wondered what had become of Carly, Julie was determined to find her.

"I tracked her down via social media, living in Blackpool with five children of her own, and she was thrilled to have the opportunity to surprise dad," Julie explained.

Instead of a quiet restaurant, Brian walked into a room packed with friends and family for his 90th birthday party. The biggest shock was seeing Carly waiting for him. "It was a total surprise and dad was absolutely delighted," said Julie.

A Celebration of Life and Legacy

The emotional reunion was made even more poignant by the presence of Brian’s former colleague, Mick Goodson, who had helped rescue Carly's late mother, Cathy, from the same fire. Like Brian, Mick had no idea Carly would be attending.

"It was wonderful to meet Brian and share in his 90th birthday celebrations," Carly said, finally able to thank her rescuer in person after 40 years.

The celebrations were perfectly capped with a birthday cake adorned with a photograph taken shortly after the heroic rescue in 1986, symbolising the profound and enduring connection forged in a moment of crisis.
