Weekend Escape: How a Tiny Village Near Birmingham Stole My Heart
A gorgeous village near Birmingham stole my heart

Inspired by the cinematic charm of films like 'The Holiday', a quest for a peaceful countryside catch-up led to an unforgettable weekend discovery just outside Birmingham.

Finding Sanctuary in a Worcestershire Hamlet

Seeking an alternative to the bustling streets of Birmingham and London, the plan was simple: find a scenic and relaxing spot to reconnect with a friend. The answer materialised as a charming one-bed cottage in the tiny, isolated Worcestershire hamlet of Blackminster, near Evesham. Arriving on a Saturday evening in December 2025, the unnamed country lane led to a modest but stunning retreat.

The cottage itself provided the ultimate cosy sanctuary. Its warm and beautiful interior created a comforting ambiance, perfect for a dreamy night's sleep far from city life. The immediate impression was one of serene, beautiful isolation, offering a complete disconnect from urban busyness.

Venturing into the Cotswolds for Exploration

After a peaceful night and a delicious homemade breakfast, the quietude of Blackminster prompted a short adventure. A 20-minute drive transported them across the border into Gloucestershire and the celebrated Cotswolds, specifically the market town of Moreton-in-Marsh.

This thriving yet quiet town offered a delightful contrast. They spent time exploring the High Street, perusing an array of cosy little boutiques. One shop, Jacana, stood out with its vast selection of colourful jumpers, where friendly service helped secure the perfect souvenir.

Countryside Walks and a Flavourful Finale

Eager to embrace the great English outdoors, they embarked on a long Sunday walk. Using the AllTrails app to find a route, they were treated to a rare spell of warm autumn sun. The experience was punctuated by encounters with sheep, a thrilling novelty for two city-raised women who found themselves alone amidst miles of breathtaking scenery.

The walk built a formidable appetite, splendidly satisfied by a find in Moreton-in-Marsh: Tikiri, a charming Sri Lankan restaurant. The warm, comforting flavours provided a gorgeous culinary end to the day in a rustic Cotswolds setting.

In conclusion, Blackminster proved the ideal peaceful village escape, a hidden gem where the only sound is the countryside itself. Its greatest strength is its location, acting as a perfect, quiet base within easy reach of explorable towns like Moreton-in-Marsh, where memories are made amongst shops, walking trails, and unexpected international cuisine.
