Shirley Ballas heartbroken by aunt's death before Strictly final

Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has received an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues after revealing the devastating death of a close family member she considered a 'second mum'.

A Heartbreaking Announcement Before the Final

The sad news comes just days before Ballas is due to return to our screens for the Strictly Come Dancing 2025 final on Saturday, December 20. The glittering event will see the remaining celebrities – Amber Davies, George Clarke, and Karen Carney – battle for the coveted Glitterball Trophy.

However, on Wednesday evening, December 17, the dancer and television personality took to Instagram to share that her cherished aunt, Mavis, had passed away. In a poignant post, Ballas uploaded several photographs of herself with her aunt and penned an emotional tribute.

Shirley's Touching Tribute to Her 'Second Mum'

"My dearest Auntie Mavis ... where do I begin," Ballas wrote. She expressed how much she would miss her aunt's familiar sayings and their playful banter, recalling one particular favourite exchange.

She described Mavis as someone who was "always there for me and my family" and emphasised the profound bond between Mavis and her own mother, Audrey. "The bond between Mavis and my mother was absolutely unbreakable," Shirley stated, noting they had been best friends for over 65 years.

The tribute also touched on lighter memories, including Mavis's unique viewing habits for the hit BBC show. "Thank you for tuning into @bbcstrictly and then switching off after you'd seen my dress. That always made me smile," Ballas shared.

Flood of Support from the Strictly Family

The comments section was quickly filled with messages of condolence and love from Ballas's famous friends and supporters.

Fellow Strictly presenter Claudia Winkleman wrote: "Sending all my love," while professional dancer Neil Jones posted a simple orange heart emoji. Hundreds of fans also offered their sympathies, with one writing: "So sorry for your loss. Your mum has lost her beautiful friend."

Another supporter added: "Aw bless you all, so sorry for your loss..... Sending so much love to you all and may Mavis rest in peace."

Shirley Ballas concluded her heartfelt post by saying she would treasure every memory, signing off: "Rest in peace beautiful Mavis. Hugs and love, Shirley and Audrey. X."
