X Factor star Chico appears in court on drink-drive charge

Former X Factor star Chico made a dramatic entrance at a London court today, dressed in a distinctive cowboy hat and a long black fur coat, as he faced a drink-driving allegation.

Court Appearance and Charges

Yousseph Slimani, the 54-year-old performer known by his stage name Chico, appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 30. He is accused of driving a Vauxhall Astra on Chase Way, Southgate, on December 13 with an alleged alcohol level of 40 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.

The court heard the details of the charge, to which Slimani entered a plea of not guilty. The district judge granted him bail, and his trial is scheduled for April 9.

From Reality TV Fame to Recent Health Struggles

Chico rose to fame after finishing in fifth place on the 2005 series of ITV's The X Factor. His subsequent single, "It's Chico Time," shot to number one, holding the top spot in the charts for two weeks.

His television career continued with appearances on shows like Dancing on Ice and Ricky Gervais's Extras, alongside performing in holiday camps. However, his life took a serious turn a few years ago when he suffered a stroke.

In 2018, his family confirmed the health crisis, stating it had been "a great shock" and requesting privacy while he underwent medical tests and recovery.

What Happens Next?

The case has been adjourned, with all parties set to reconvene for the trial in the spring. The unique fashion choice for his court appearance has drawn significant public and media attention, reminding many of the flamboyant personality that first captivated audiences nearly two decades ago.

As the legal process continues, the former pop star maintains his innocence regarding the drink-driving allegation.
