Young people in Bolton who are currently out of work and education are being handed a lifeline through a unique and fully-funded 12-week development course. The King’s Trust TEAM Programme, delivered in partnership with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, is now accepting applications for its next intake.
A Practical Pathway to Progress
The scheme, which runs three times a year, is specifically designed for 16 to 25-year-olds seeking direction. It provides a highly structured environment where participants work directly with experienced fire service leaders to rebuild their confidence and set goals. The curriculum moves beyond traditional classroom learning, focusing instead on hands-on, practical experience that equips young people for the real world.
Participants can earn recognised awards in First Aid, Food Hygiene, and Money Management, alongside a formal Level 1 qualification in Teamwork, Employability, and Community Skills. The programme also covers essential workplace safety modules, including Health and Safety and Manual Handling, ensuring attendees are job-ready.
Experience, Resilience and Community Impact
A standout feature of the course is the residential week of outdoor activities, a challenging experience that past attendees credit for building strong team bonds and personal resilience. The programme also includes a significant community project element, where teams spend several weeks supporting local causes such as care homes and homeless shelters, learning leadership and planning skills while making a tangible difference in Bolton.
To provide a genuine taste of different careers, the course incorporates workplace visits, guest speakers, and culminates in a crucial two-week work placement. These placements are coordinated with regional partners like The Manchester College to connect participants with local employers and explore long-term career options.
From Graduation to Employment
The 12-week journey concludes with a celebratory graduation event, where local civic leaders acknowledge the achievements of every individual. Organisers report that many former students use the qualifications and personal growth gained to move directly into paid employment or further training.
Applications for the next Bolton intake are now open. Young people aged 16 to 25, or those who know someone who would benefit, can find full details and the application form via The King’s Trust official website or by contacting their local fire station.
