Loughborough's Way of the Wyrd Border Morris Invites Community to Free Dance Sessions

Way of the Wyrd Border Morris, based in Loughborough, is set to welcome the local community next month with free dance sessions as part of the Let’s Dance initiative and the second National Day of Dance. This exciting programme, championed by Angela Rippon CBE, aims to highlight the positive impacts of dance on both physical and mental well-being, fostering social connections and encouraging participation from those who might not typically engage in dancing activities.

Celebrating 15 Years of Tradition and Inclusivity

Founded 15 years ago, Way of the Wyrd is a morris dancing side that specialises in the border morris style, which originates from the Welsh-English border region. The Let’s Dance events are a key component of their anniversary celebrations throughout 2026, marking this significant milestone with community-focused activities.

The group regularly practises at Thorpe Acre church hall on Sunday evenings, where they learn and perform a mix of traditional and contemporary dances. On Sundays, March 8 and 15, they will open their doors to people of all ages for complimentary sessions of border morris dancing. This style is characterised by energetic movements such as clashing sticks, step-hop sequences, and occasional vocal expressions like whoops, offering a dynamic and engaging experience.

Promoting Health and Community Through Dance

Christine Parsons, the dance and music leader for Way of the Wyrd, emphasised the inclusive nature of the initiative. She stated, "Let’s Dance is about encouraging everybody, from older people to teenagers, to embrace the joy and benefits of dancing. The more we dance, the better we will all be – as individuals, and as a society. Way of the Wyrd is a friendly and inclusive side, and we invite people to just come and give it a go." Accompanied children are warmly welcomed to join in, making it a family-friendly event.

The sessions not only provide a fun and active way to spend time but also align with broader health campaigns by promoting exercise and social interaction, which are crucial for mental and physical wellness.
