Nineties nostalgia is hitting television screens this weekend as one of the decade's most beloved films returns to broadcast, while a fresh take on the legendary outlaw arrives on streaming platforms.
Classic Film Returns to Television
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the 1991 blockbuster starring Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman, is scheduled to air on Great TV this Sunday, November 23rd, at 6:05pm. The epic adventure film, which originally ran for 135 minutes in cinemas, has been allocated a 175-minute slot to accommodate advertising breaks.
The film represents a significant piece of cinematic history, having grossed an impressive $390 million worldwide during its original release, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the entire decade.
Unforgettable Cast and Soundtrack
Kevin Costner's portrayal of the heroic outlaw remains one of the most memorable interpretations of the character, supported by Alan Rickman's scene-stealing performance as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Morgan Freeman's role as Azeem.
Beyond the stellar cast, the film is equally renowned for its soundtrack. Bryan Adams' power ballad "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" became the unofficial anthem of summer 1991, spending a record-breaking 16 consecutive weeks at number one in the UK charts - an achievement that remains unbeaten to this day.
New Robin Hood Series Launches
Coinciding with the classic film's television return, a brand new Robin Hood series has premiered on MGM+ via Amazon Prime Video. The 10-part series features Sean Bean and Australian actor Jack Patten in leading roles, with Lydia Peckham appearing as Priscilla of Nottingham.
The series began releasing episodes on November 2nd, with new instalments dropping weekly until the season finale on December 28th. Unlike the main Amazon Prime Video content, this series requires an additional MGM+ subscription to access.
While numerous adaptations of the Robin Hood legend have emerged over the years - including Russell Crowe's 2010 film and Taron Egerton's 2018 version - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves continues to hold a special place in audiences' hearts as one of the most successful and enduring interpretations of the timeless tale.
