Wrexham Apprentice Earns Prestigious International Humanitarian Role in Ghana
A talented apprentice from Wrexham has achieved a remarkable distinction, being chosen as one of just 20 young individuals across the United Kingdom – and only two in Wales – to represent the nation on an international humanitarian initiative in Ghana. Georgia Ellams, a first-year Airbus Degree Apprentice studying at Coleg Cambria University Centre in Deeside, will embark on this life-changing journey to Accra during the upcoming Christmas period.
Scouts of the World Award Recognition
Georgia's selection is for the highly regarded Scouts of the World Award, which stands as one of the most esteemed international honors within the global Scouting movement. This accolade recognizes outstanding commitment and leadership potential among young scouts, providing them with opportunities to engage in meaningful community service projects abroad.
Background and Educational Journey
Hailing from Wrexham, Georgia attended St Joseph's High School before progressing to Ysgol Dinas Brân Sixth Form in Llangollen. She has maintained a longstanding fascination with mechanical and aerospace engineering, which has guided her educational and career path. At 19 years old, she is currently enrolled in the Airbus Degree Apprenticeship programme at Coleg Cambria, where she combines rigorous academic study with practical, hands-on industry experience.
"I've always been interested in how things work, particularly aircraft," Georgia explained during National Apprenticeship Week. "The degree apprenticeship route felt like the perfect opportunity. The support from Coleg Cambria and Airbus has been incredible and has really helped me grow in confidence."
Georgia aspires to build a future career in aerospace engineering with the Royal Air Force, leveraging the skills and knowledge gained through her apprenticeship.
Dedicated Scouting Involvement
Beyond her academic pursuits, Georgia is deeply engaged with the Scouting movement. She serves as a Scout Leader with the Bishop's Own group in Wrexham and holds the position of 14–24 team lead for Wrexham Scouts District. Her involvement with Scouts began at the tender age of five, and she previously represented the United Kingdom at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea when she was just 16 years old.
Humanitarian Project Details
During her two-week stay in Ghana, Georgia will collaborate with the charity organization Village by Village, immersing herself in local communities to support various development projects. These initiatives may encompass teaching essential first aid skills, improving access to clean and safe water sources, or assisting in the construction of educational facilities. All necessary project materials will be fundraised in advance by the dedicated volunteers participating in the program.
"I get so much from Scouts, I honestly don't think I'd be pursuing this career or have had the confidence to secure a place with Airbus, without my journey through Scouting," Georgia reflected. "It's pushed me to challenge myself and grow."

Salah Berdouk, curriculum director for advanced engineering at Coleg Cambria Deeside, expressed immense pride in Georgia's accomplishments. "Georgia is an exceptional young person and a real inspiration. We are extremely proud of her achievements. Georgia added her own sentiments about the upcoming experience: "I'm incredibly excited for this opportunity. Being part of Scouting allows me to test myself, give back and develop skills that will benefit me throughout my career. I feel very privileged to be able to take part."
