Education South West Wins Prestigious Staff Development Award at MAT Excellence Awards
Education South West Wins Staff Development Award

Education South West (ESW) is celebrating a national triumph after securing the 'Staff Development Award' at the prestigious MAT Excellence Awards. The trust, which comprises eight primary schools, four secondary schools, one all-through school, and a University Technical College across Devon, was honoured for its sector-leading dedication to professional development, career progression, and staff wellbeing.

Recognition for Outstanding Commitment

The award acknowledges trusts that demonstrate exceptional commitment to developing their people and fostering a culture where staff can flourish. Judges highlighted Education South West's ambitious and inclusive approach to professional growth, which integrates personalised development pathways, bespoke coaching, and vibrant professional networks to support colleagues at every stage of their careers.

Growing Talent from Within

A standout strength of the trust is its commitment to nurturing internal talent. Through initiatives like the 'Grow Your Own' leadership programmes, a flexible CPD offer, and clear progression routes, Education South West has created ample opportunities for staff to advance their careers. This is evidenced by the fact that 11 of the trust's 14 headteachers have been promoted from within.

Culture of Collaboration and Care

Alongside professional development, the trust's wellbeing pledge and trust-wide pedagogical principles have cultivated a culture of collaboration, consistency, and care. Rising staff satisfaction and robust internal progression rates underscore the effectiveness of this approach across all schools within the trust.

Celebrating Multi-Academy Trust Success

The MAT Excellence Awards celebrate the achievements of multi-academy trusts nationwide, recognising organisations that make a significant difference to children, staff, and communities.

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, expressed his delight: "We are absolutely thrilled to be recognised for our staff development. This award reflects something we deeply value as a trust: creating an environment where people can grow, develop, and build fulfilling careers while making a difference to the lives of children and young people."

He added: "We know that investing in our staff is one of the most powerful ways to improve outcomes for pupils. The fact that so many of our leaders have progressed through our schools demonstrates the strength of the culture we have built together. This award belongs to every colleague across Education South West. Their commitment, professionalism, and willingness to continually learn and improve are what make our trust such a special place to work and learn."
