Watkins: Konsa Is 'Mad' Underrated, One of PL's Best Centre-Backs

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has heaped praise on teammate Ezri Konsa, describing the defender as “mad” underrated and one of the Premier League's finest centre-backs. The pair are currently representing England at the World Cup, where Konsa has started every match under manager Thomas Tuchel, while Watkins has made only one substitute appearance, against Panama in the group stage.

Watkins Highlights Konsa's Quality

Speaking ahead of England's last-16 tie against Mexico, Watkins expressed his admiration for Konsa's consistent performances. “I think Ez is just so underrated,” Watkins said. “It's mad how under the radar he goes and for so many years he has. I think he's one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, but people don't look at that straight away. I don't know if it's profile around Villa and stuff like that. People always look at the top teams.”

Watkins pointed to Konsa's defensive reliability, recalling a standout performance against Brazil where Vinicius Junior could not get past him. “But you know defensively he hardly puts a foot wrong. I think one v one he played there I remember against Brazil and Vinicius couldn't get past Ez. He's so solid.”

Konsa's World Cup Role

Konsa has been a mainstay in Tuchel's lineup, starting all group-stage matches. His solid displays have helped England advance to the knockout phase, where they will face Mexico. The defender's form has drawn praise from teammates and pundits alike, though Watkins believes he remains underappreciated outside of Villa Park.

At club level, Konsa has been a key figure for Aston Villa, forming a strong partnership in central defence. His performances have been crucial in Villa's recent campaigns, contributing to their push for European qualification.
