Digbeth Community Group Issues Warning Over Five Critical Problems in the Suburb

A community group in Digbeth has issued a stark warning about five significant problems currently affecting the neighbourhood, despite the area's reputation for independent businesses, quirky shops, and vibrant food scenes. Friends of Bradford Street, a dedicated litter picking group, has been actively cleaning up the streets, but organizers report that the litter problem has worsened over time.

Friends of Bradford Street's Efforts and Growth

The organizer of Friends of Bradford Street explained that he first became involved with the initiative in August 2022. Since then, the group has expanded, but paradoxically, the litter issue has intensified. The group regularly engages in litter picking outings, focusing on cleaning up Digbeth's streets, and has collected an impressive 906 bags of litter so far, according to the CleanupUK website.

The Five Problems Impacting Digbeth

In an interview with BirminghamLive, the organizer detailed the five key problems believed to be impacting Digbeth:

  1. Litter from Visitors: People passing through the area are leaving litter behind, contributing to the ongoing issue.
  2. Poor Waste Management by Local Businesses and Apartments: The group has learned to distinguish between types of litter, noting that aged, worn litter often comes from local businesses or apartment buildings where waste management is inadequate, leading to overspill into the streets.
  3. Council Strikes: The organizer pointed out that council strikes have exacerbated the problem, with missed collections allegedly causing additional litter accumulation.
  4. Substance Use and Takeaway Litter: Visitors reportedly use substances like nitrous oxide and leave behind bags of litter from takeaways, further cluttering the neighbourhood.
  5. Short-Term Lets: The number of short-term lets in the area has been cited as a contributing factor to the litter problem.

Worsening Situation Despite Volunteer Efforts

The organizer emphasized that the litter problem in Digbeth has actually worsened since the scheme began in 2022. While the number of bags collected has increased, so has the volunteer count, but he noted that this isn't a scientific measure. Simply observing the streets makes it clear that the situation has deteriorated. He stated, "It has got worse," highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the community.

Friends of Bradford Street continues its strong efforts to clean up Digbeth, but the group's warning underscores the need for broader solutions to address these five persistent problems in the suburb.
