Walsall Council Launches Major CCTV Expansion to Combat Littering and Fly-Tipping
Residents and visitors in Walsall have been placed on high alert following a significant council initiative to install 21 new CCTV cameras across the town. This move forms a critical part of a robust crackdown by the local authority aimed at tackling persistent issues of littering, fly-tipping, and anti-social behaviour.
Enforcement Action Yields 55 Fines in One Month
Between February 10 and March 10, Walsall Council issued an impressive 55 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for littering offences. Of these, 38 offenders have already paid their fines, demonstrating the immediate impact of the enforcement drive. The council has emphasized that littering is unacceptable and that those responsible will be held fully accountable for their actions.
Strategic Investment in Public Safety and Cleanliness
The installation of the 21 new cameras represents a major investment by Walsall Council, bringing the total number of operational CCTV units across the borough to 71. This expansion is designed to strengthen enforcement capabilities, helping authorities identify offenders more effectively and protect local communities.
Cllr Adam Hicken, Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Safe Communities at Walsall Council, stated: "We are continuing to strengthen our enforcement work across Walsall, including the deployment of additional CCTV cameras to help identify offenders and protect our communities. If you choose to litter, you should expect to face the consequences."
Reinvestment of Fines and Community Resources
All income generated from littering fines is reinvested directly into enforcement activities. This includes funding for CCTV monitoring, thorough investigations, and further action against offenders. The council is committed to ensuring that penalties contribute to ongoing efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment.
To support residents in disposing of waste legally, Walsall offers two Household Waste Recycling Centres located at Fryers Road in Bloxwich and Middlemore Lane in Aldridge. These facilities accept general waste, recycling materials, and bulky items. Additionally, a bulky waste collection service is available for households unable to transport larger items themselves.
Families requiring additional bin capacity due to growing household sizes or specific medical needs can apply for a larger bin through the council’s official website. For reporting incidents of fly-tipping or illegal dumping, residents are encouraged to visit go.walsall.gov.uk or call 01922 653355.
This comprehensive approach underscores Walsall Council’s dedication to enhancing public spaces and fostering a culture of responsibility among all community members.
