A former training centre for coal miners in South Wales is undergoing a major eco-friendly redevelopment. College staff at Crosskeys Campus are calling on local residents and former students to submit old photographs and personal stories to celebrate the building's history. These memories will be transformed into a large-scale artwork inside the new modern learning facility for future generations.
History of the Site
The educational site first opened in the 1960s and grew into a major regional hub for A-levels and apprenticeships. It originally served as a training centre for coal miners before expanding its offerings.
Ryan Chard, Head of Learner Services at Crosskeys Campus, said: “As we begin an exciting new chapter for the campus, we want to ensure that future generations can celebrate and connect with its rich and diverse history.” He added: “We’d love to hear from learners and staff from every decade – including those from the early mining years – to help capture the colourful journey of the site from its inception in the 1960s to today.”
Former Student Success Story
Paul Edwards, a consultant surgeon at Aneurin Bevan Health Board, credits the supportive teaching staff at Coleg Gwent for his success. He said: “Although I struggled with confidence at the time, the tutors at Coleg Gwent gave me the support and encouragement I needed to succeed. Without that experience, I don’t think I would have achieved the results I needed to go on and study biochemistry and pharmacology.” He added: “It has always been an outstanding facility for young learners across southeast Wales, and the redevelopment will ensure future generations continue to benefit from the same high-quality opportunities and support.”
Redevelopment Plans
The multi-million pound building works will create new engineering workshops and a modern gym, backed by Welsh Government funding. The eco-friendly updates will ensure the campus is fully energy efficient while continuing to teach thousands of young people across the region.
