The Met Office has indicated that the UK could experience further warm spells at the beginning of September, with temperatures likely to remain above average as the nation transitions into autumn. According to its latest long-range forecast, covering Saturday, August 29, to Saturday, September 12, temperatures are "again likely to be above average overall." The forecast adds: "There is a chance that late season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south."
Possible North-South Split
The forecast also highlights a possible split across the nation, with more changeable conditions developing in northern and north-western regions, while the south and east could benefit from drier weather. However, forecasters have cautioned that the signals remain weak, meaning "something close to the climatological norm is the current preferred story." In other words, a September heatwave is possible but not guaranteed.
This prediction comes as the Met Office's chief meteorologist warned that the country, including Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, may not recover from drought even after autumn rainfall. Severn Trent has seen reservoir levels drop significantly after successive weeks of minimal rainfall and high temperatures have left local ground parched and river levels low. Wildfires have been increasing in the region, with huge swathes of land burning and homes in the West Midlands going up in flames.
Rain on the Way for Birmingham and West Midlands
The latest prediction follows the UK experiencing three widespread heatwaves and numerous climate records already broken by mid-July. Spring 2026 was the warmest on record for England and Wales, while June was England's warmest June on record. Over the coming days, however, the weather is set to become more unsettled.
In Birmingham and the West Midlands, rain is expected next week. The Met Office predicts a mostly cloudy Monday, with rain which could possibly turn heavy overnight. This gradually clears to sunny spells on Tuesday and Wednesday, but a few showers are still possible. Temperatures are expected to be nearer average for the time of year.
