Firefighters are currently tackling a large grass fire at Hednesford Hills in Cannock, Staffordshire, and have urged the public to avoid the area. Three crews and a water carrier were called to the scene at 1pm on Sunday, 16 August.
Fire crews respond to Hednesford Hills incident
Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement. A spokesman said: “Crews are currently at the scene of a large grass fire at Hednesford Hills, Cannock. Three appliances and a water carrier were called to the scene at 1pm today (Sunday 16 August). Please avoid the area where possible.”
The fire comes as wildfires continue to cause destruction across the country, affecting homes, businesses, and land. In response, the fire service has issued advice to help prevent grass fires.
Fire safety advice issued to the public
Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service has shared the following guidance to reduce the risk of grass fires:
- Do not have open fires or BBQs in the countryside, as they can easily set fire to the ground and spread.
- Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach and talk to them about the dangers of starting fires outside.
- Dispose of cigarettes properly, ensuring they are put out and placed in dedicated bins. Never throw cigarette ends out of car windows.
- Take rubbish home or put it in a nearby bin, as glass bottles can cause fires when sunlight shines through them.
The fire service also highlighted its “Don’t be Blamed for the Flames” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the causes of wildfires.
