The landscape, already parched by high temperatures and constant sun, can be a hostile environment for wildlife in high summer. Despite this, the coastline remains hugely popular, especially during the week of The Open golf championship at Royal Birkdale, which drew thousands of visitors from around the globe.
Importance of the Sefton Coast for Wildlife
The Sefton Coast is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, a Special Area of Conservation, and a Ramsar site, marking its international importance as a seasonal wetland. This makes it one of the most significant areas for wildlife in the region. Green Sefton encourages visitors to enjoy their trip but expects them to follow rules to prevent damage to wildlife and habitats and to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
Barbecues and Fires Banned
Barbecues and fires are strictly prohibited on the Sefton Coast due to the high risk of fire. According to Green Sefton, disposable barbecues can superheat the sand, leaving scorching patches that could cause severe burns to children's feet or those of unwary adults. A single spark from any fire or barbecue can drift into the dune system, igniting vegetation and causing long-term damage to rare species. While vegetation may appear to regrow quickly after a fire, the ash left behind fertilizes the sand, allowing ruderal plant species to outcompete dune specialists, shading areas and making them unattractive for wildlife such as Natterjack Toads, Sand Lizards, and Northern Dune Tiger Beetles. Green Sefton advises leaving barbecues at home and enjoying a picnic instead.
Camping and Overnight Stays Not Allowed
Camping and overnight stays are also prohibited to protect the important habitat. After thousands of visitors during the day, wildlife needs the reduced disturbance at night to recover, hunt, or rest.
Golf Practice Prohibited on Beach and Dunes
Golf practice is not allowed on the beach or in the dune system. With numerous public and private courses in Sefton, including the world-class Royal Birkdale, visitors are encouraged to use those facilities instead.
Dog Walking Guidelines
Most dog walkers avoid the dune system in hot weather, as temperatures are even higher in sheltered areas, making it painful and hazardous for pets. If walking dogs in the cool of the evening or early morning, owners should keep them away from pools and wildlife, including feeding or resting birds.
