British Gas Offers 1.3m Customers Half-Price Electricity on Friday
British Gas: Half-price electricity for 1.3m customers

More than 1.3 million British Gas customers have the chance to slash their electricity bills by half this Friday, as the supplier announces a special Green Flex event.

What is the PeakSave Green Flex event?

The energy provider has confirmed it will run a PeakSave Green Flex event on Friday 19th December. During this event, eligible customers will pay just half the usual price for their electricity for a two-hour window.

The discount period will run from 11:00 am until 13:00 pm. This initiative is made possible due to windy weather conditions forecast for tomorrow, which are expected to generate a surplus of renewable energy for the National Grid.

How can customers benefit and save?

Customers who are part of the PeakSave scheme can use the half-price hours to tackle various household tasks at a significantly reduced cost. Suggested activities include:

  • Preparing lunch and cooking.
  • Charging electronic devices like phones and laptops.
  • Starting festive preparations for next week.
  • Running washing machines, dishwashers, or other high-energy appliances.

There is no obligation to change routines, but British Gas points out that the more energy use customers can shift into these windows, the greater their savings will be. All savings earned will appear as a credit on subsequent energy bills.

Smart meters are key to accessing smart tariffs

Participation in these dynamic tariff events is facilitated by smart meter technology. British Gas highlights that it has installed over 1.2 million smart meters in 2025 – more than any other UK supplier – enabling a growing number of households to benefit from such schemes.

Eligible PeakSave customers, both new and existing, will receive an email invitation to opt into the Green Flex event. This is separate from the regular PeakSave Sunday scheme, which automatically offers half-price electricity every Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

The Green Flex events are scheduled based on British Gas's own forecasting, allowing the company to test potential consumer savings and the positive impact on grid demand during periods of high renewable generation.

Since its launch, the PeakSave initiative has rewarded customers for shifting their energy use, supporting a greener energy supply. To date, British Gas has paid out over £30 million in total to participants in the scheme.
