Octopus Energy Hits Major Milestone: One Million Smart Meters Installed in 2025
Octopus Energy installs one millionth smart meter

Octopus Energy has announced a landmark achievement for 2025, marking a significant 'company first' by completing its one-millionth smart meter installation of the year.

A Personal Milestone in Manchester

The pivotal one-millionth device was fitted at the home of Martin Browne, a 50-year-old resident of Manchester. The energy supplier revealed that this record-breaking year saw two-thirds of installations involve brand-new meters for customers who actively opted to upgrade to smart technology.

The remaining installations replaced older or inherited devices, ensuring homes continued to operate efficiently. Rival firms to Octopus include EDF, EON, and Ovo.

Engineering Effort and Customer Savings

Beyond new fittings, the company's engineers worked behind the scenes to restore or remotely fix almost 100,000 meters. This proactive approach helped customers avoid unnecessary physical replacements, saving them both time and money in the long term.

Smart meters are widely recognised as the cornerstone of a modern energy system. The real-time data they provide is crucial, enabling over 800,000 Octopus customers to use innovative smart tariffs.

Powering Smarter Energy Use

Tariffs such as Agile, Cosy, Snug, and Intelligent Octopus Go allow households to shift their energy use to cheaper times, directly cutting their bills. This flexibility is becoming increasingly vital for the national grid, as it lets consumers use more green energy when it is plentiful.

These smart meter-powered initiatives are not just good for wallets; they reduce overall system costs, cut carbon emissions, and help put money back into people's pockets. In total, smart tariffs and flexibility schemes save Octopus customers more than £200 million annually.

Engagement is high, with 3.5 million Octopus customers regularly interacting with their smart meters via the Octoplus rewards scheme. This includes taking part in Saving Sessions, earning rewards, and enjoying perks like the occasional free coffee.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product Officer at Octopus Energy, said: "Smart meters aren’t just little boxes on the wall – they’re the key to cheaper bills, cleaner energy and a grid that works for everyone."

"Hitting a million installs this year shows just how much customers want to take control of their energy, and we’re over the moon to help them do it. If that milestone also means surprising someone in Manchester with a unicorn and Jason Manford, what more can we say!" she added.
