As communities across the globe unite to observe World Cancer Day this February 4th, a remarkable local partnership in Southend-on-Sea is being celebrated for its profound impact on patient care. Southend Hospital is honouring an enduring 11-year collaboration with the Prittlewell Angling and Darts Society (PADAS), a dedicated group whose charitable fishing matches have netted tens of thousands of pounds to support those battling cancer.
A Legacy of Compassion and Fundraising
The society's latest contribution, a generous cheque for £1,230, was formally presented to the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity. This donation is earmarked for the Radiotherapy Fund, a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing treatment options. Specifically, the funds will assist in acquiring new Surface Guided Radiation Therapy technology, an advanced system designed to make cancer treatment more precise and significantly more comfortable for patients undergoing radiotherapy.
Continuing a Heartfelt Tradition
The tradition of charity fishing matches was originally established in 2015 by former PADAS member Paul Rashbrook. Motivated by the loss of his mother, Dianne, and later his father-in-law, Duncan, to cancer, Paul initiated these events as a personal tribute and a means to give back. Although Paul has since relocated from the area, the angling society has proudly and steadfastly continued this fundraising mission in his honour, ensuring his legacy of compassion lives on through their efforts.
Over a Decade of Dedicated Support
Clair Dade, the fundraising coordinator for the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, expressed immense gratitude for the group's unwavering commitment. She highlighted the humble nature of the PADAS supporters, who have consistently downplayed their achievements despite their significant contributions.
"Our supporters from PADAS are incredibly humble about the fundraising they’ve taken on for us, but since 2015 they have raised more than £34,000 to support patients undergoing cancer treatment at Southend Hospital," Clair remarked. "We are beyond thankful for the incredible support they continue to provide, which directly benefits local individuals and families facing cancer diagnoses."
This longstanding partnership exemplifies how community-driven initiatives can make a tangible difference in healthcare, offering not only financial support but also hope and improved quality of life for patients in the Southend area.
