Cheese Recall in UK Over Listeria Bacteria Risk, MS Warns
Cheese Recall Over Listeria Bacteria Risk

Marks & Spencer has issued a recall for several cheese products due to potential listeria contamination, warning that consumption may cause flu-like symptoms. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed the recall, which affects batches of the retailer's own-brand cheese.

Products Affected and Batch Details

The recall covers M&S Scottish Cheddar with Caramelised Onion Chutney, M&S Scottish Cheddar with Apricot and Mango Chutney, and M&S Cornish Cruncher with Caramelised Onion Chutney. All products have a use-by date of September 30, 2024. The FSA advised customers not to consume these products and to return them to any M&S store for a full refund.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious infection particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues.

Company Response and Customer Advice

An M&S spokesperson said: "We are recalling these products as a precaution due to the possible presence of listeria. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience and urge them to return the products for a refund." The FSA added that point-of-sale notices will be displayed in stores to alert customers.

The recall affects products sold across the UK. Customers can contact M&S customer services for further information. The FSA recommends anyone who has consumed the product and is concerned about their health to seek medical advice.
