The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is offering state pensioners an additional £114 per week through Attendance Allowance, provided they meet qualifying conditions. This benefit is paid at two weekly rates depending on the severity of the claimant's condition.
Attendance Allowance Payment Rates
The lower rate of Attendance Allowance is £76.70 per week, which amounts to £306.80 monthly and £3,988.40 annually. The higher rate is £114.60 per week, equating to £458.40 monthly and £5,959.20 annually. These payments are designed to help individuals over State Pension age who require assistance with personal care or supervision due to illness or disability.
Qualifying Conditions and Six-Month Rule
To claim Attendance Allowance, applicants must be over State Pension age and have needed care or support for at least six months. This includes help due to a physical disability, illness, or learning difficulty. The lower rate applies to those who need frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night. The higher rate is for individuals requiring help or supervision throughout both day and night, or those nearing the end of life.
How the Allowance Can Be Used
According to Age UK, "DWP Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision because of an illness or disability. There are 2 different weekly rates, and the amount you get depends on how much help you need." The charity also notes that the allowance does not have to be spent on care. Many recipients use the money for other types of help at home, such as paying bills, getting meals delivered, or covering taxi costs.
Application Process
Eligible individuals can apply for Attendance Allowance through the DWP. The benefit is tax-free and does not affect other income or savings. It is available to those who meet the care needs criteria and have done so for at least six months. The payment is intended to support independence and improve quality of life for older people with disabilities or health conditions.
