Southport Macmillan Centre Introduces HOPE Course for Cancer Survivors

When individuals receive a cancer diagnosis and complete their treatment, there is often an expectation to return to normalcy. Friends and family might encourage them to "put it all behind" and move on. However, many patients find that life feels irrevocably changed, and the concept of "normal" no longer applies.

Macmillan Cancer Support recognizes this challenging transition and has developed the HOPE course—Help to Overcome Problems Effectively—to assist cancer patients in navigating their "new normal." This program addresses critical issues such as sleep disturbances, fatigue, body image concerns, difficult conversations, relaxation techniques, and optimizing diet and exercise routines.

Course Details and Community Support

The Southport Macmillan Centre is offering a HOPE course starting on April 14, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Spanning six weeks, the course provides a supportive environment where attendees can connect with others facing similar situations, often finding this peer interaction invaluable.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and Screening

April marks Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the UK. Early detection is crucial, with nine out of ten people surviving when diagnosed promptly. Local screening programs are available, and if you receive a bowel cancer screening pack at your door, participation is strongly encouraged—it can save lives.

Lung Cancer Screening Initiatives

Southport is also benefiting from lung cancer screening for individuals aged 50 and above with a history of smoking. You may have noticed the screening bus in the Dunes car park. Invitations or text messages from your GP might be sent out to eligible residents, promoting early detection and intervention.

Upcoming Health and Wellbeing Event

On April 20, from 10 AM to noon, the Southport Macmillan Centre will host a Health and Wellbeing Event at the Dunes Leisure Centre. Focused on the theme of moving more, the event will explore the benefits of exercise for cancer patients. Anyone affected by cancer and living in the Southport area is welcome to attend. To book a place, please get in touch with the Centre.
