The mother of a courageous Midlands girl battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer has shared a profoundly emotional update, revealing that her daughter is now receiving palliative care as her condition deteriorates.
A Long and Difficult Journey
Amelia Kolpa was originally diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma back in 2020. Her treatment regimen was extensive and grueling, spanning a total of twenty-three months. This intensive protocol included multiple rounds of chemotherapy, targeted immunotherapy sessions, and courses of radiotherapy in a determined effort to combat the disease.
Despite achieving a period of stable health following this initial treatment, the family's hopes were shattered when the cancer returned not once, but twice. These recurrences happened even after Amelia participated in clinical trials, exploring new potential treatments. The family has now confirmed that Amelia is under palliative care, focused on her comfort and quality of life.
An Outpouring of Global Support
Amelia's story captured hearts worldwide when she expressed a simple birthday wish: to receive 8,000 cards for her eighth birthday on March 3rd. The response was nothing short of astonishing. In February, a convoy of bikers delivered a staggering 60,000 cards to her home in Rowley Regis. The final tally of cards received has reached an incredible 341,521, far surpassing her original dream.
The global community rallied again for another of Amelia's wishes—to see people perform the Macarena dance. Social media platforms were flooded with videos from individuals and groups dancing in her honor, creating a wave of support for the young girl to enjoy.
A Mother's Heartfelt Message
Amelia's mother has consistently used social media to express her gratitude to the countless well-wishers. In a previous post, she movingly stated, "I feel as if the whole world has wrapped its arms around my little girl."
However, her latest update, shared on Sunday, March 15th, conveyed a deeper layer of sorrow. "Our Amelia is slowly slipping away… and right now our only priority is that she is not in pain, that she feels peaceful, safe, and surrounded by love every single moment," she wrote, adding that her heart was "breaking into a thousand pieces."
She reflected on the timing, noting it was Mother's Day in the UK. "Today is Mother’s Day. I carried her under my heart for nine months. I felt every little movement, every hope, every dream," she shared. "And for the past years we have been fighting together – for her health, for her life, for every single day we were given."
Gratitude Amidst Profound Grief
In her message, Amelia's mother acknowledged the difficult journey, stating there were "tears, fear, and moments when the world felt unbearably heavy." Yet, she emphasized the power of their bond, saying "there was also a love so strong that it never let us give up." She vowed to continue fighting alongside her daughter "until the very end. Until her very last moment."
She concluded with a powerful expression of thanks to everyone who supported Amelia's dreams. "From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped make Amelia’s most secret dreams come true. Because of you she was able to smile, to feel joy, and to see how much goodness there is in this world. I will never forget that," she wrote.
Her final words were a testament to the strength drawn from the community: "Thank you for being with us during the hardest time of our lives. Your love and support give us strength when we feel like we have none left."
