Paul C Brunson Shares Touching Tribute to Mel Schilling's Inspiring Spirit

Married At First Sight UK expert Paul C Brunson has opened up about the incredible strength and dedication of his late co-star Mel Schilling during her battle with colon cancer. The relationship expert, who passed away at age 54, continued working tirelessly throughout her treatment, demonstrating what Brunson describes as "extraordinary strength."

A Commitment to Work and Family Amid Treatment

Paul C Brunson revealed that despite undergoing exhausting chemotherapy sessions, Mel Schilling maintained an intense work schedule that included flying between Australia and the United Kingdom for filming commitments. The American therapist, 50, explained that there were days when they filmed for up to 14 hours while Schilling was simultaneously receiving cancer treatment.

"All of this while going through chemotherapy," Brunson wrote in his emotional tribute. "Despite the travel, the treatment, the strain on her body... she showed up fully. Every single time. Always with a smile. I never once heard her complain."

Remembering Her Genuine Connection with Fans

Brunson shared a poignant memory from their first BAFTA nomination in 2022 that highlighted Schilling's authentic character. While many celebrities would simply wave to fans on the red carpet, Schilling made a point of stepping off the carpet, moving around barriers, and personally hugging supporters who called out her name.

"Not a wave. Not a gesture. A real moment," Brunson recalled. "The level of respect she showed her fans... that's something I'll never forget."

Fearless Advocacy and Professional Integrity

The MAFS UK expert also praised Schilling's unwavering commitment to important causes during their time working together on the show. Brunson noted that when it came to defending women and the LGBTQ+ community during commitment ceremonies, Schilling was particularly fearless in her approach.

"She didn't dilute it. She didn't make it comfortable," he explained. "She made it honest. And she stood firm in it every single time."

The Softer Side of a Strong Personality

While acknowledging Schilling's reputation as a straight talker with tremendous strength, Brunson also remembered the tender moments when she spoke about her family. He described how her entire demeanor would soften when discussing her husband Gareth Brisbane and their 10-year-old daughter Maddie.

"Her voice changed. Her energy shifted," Brunson wrote. "There was always gentleness and tenderness. A deep, deep love. That's something I'll never forget."

Schilling was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023, and the disease eventually spread to both her lungs and brain. Throughout her health battle, she continued her work as a television psychologist, helping others find love while managing her own challenging treatment regimen.

Brunson concluded his tribute by reflecting on Schilling's lasting legacy: "Mel showed us what it means to live your values. To choose people. To show up with strength, even when it's hard. To stand for something. To never give up on yourself. And to love deeply."
