A breast surgeon has provided a unique glimpse into her professional and personal life, as cameras followed her for a new national television documentary. Broomfield Hospital takes center stage in the second episode of Channel 5's series, The Surgeon, which tracks consultant breast surgeon Sascha Dua and her team as they perform critical surgeries for two patients battling breast cancer.
Behind the Scenes of High-Pressure Surgery
This documentary offers an unprecedented look into the intense world of the operating theatre, where life-saving procedures are conducted under immense pressure. It also delves into the consulting room, where difficult news must be delivered with compassion, and explores the everyday challenges and joys of balancing work with home life.
Sascha Dua expressed her thoughts on the experience, stating, "This was an amazing opportunity to showcase the brilliant work we do in the Breast unit at Broomfield Hospital. It was also a bit odd being followed for three months by cameras, but I hope it conveys how complex breast surgery is."
Highlighting Teamwork and Compassionate Care
She added, "It demonstrates how many people work to support our patients, especially in the dark days after a cancer diagnosis. I am hugely grateful to all who came on this filming journey with me and that we were able to show our compassionate and excellent care to the public."
The highly anticipated series consists of four parts, with the first episode scheduled to air on Wednesday, February 18 at 9pm. Sascha and the breast surgery team will be featured in the second episode on Wednesday, February 25.
Hospital Leadership Praises the Documentary
Julie Smith, managing director of Broomfield Hospital, commented on the significance of the series, saying, "It's great that everyone else across the country will get to see some of the fantastic work our amazing staff do and the positive impact it has on patients. Programmes like this shine a spotlight on some of the amazing things we do in the NHS, which are truly inspiring."
She further noted, "Perhaps someone watching it may then be inspired to become a surgeon when they are older or come and work for the Breast unit and help change lives, just like Sascha."
Growing Media Presence for NHS Trust
This documentary marks the third series that the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has appeared in since 2024, following recent programmes for Netflix and U&W. This growing media attention underscores the trust's commitment to transparency and public engagement in healthcare.
The series aims to educate and inspire viewers by revealing the intricate details of medical procedures and the human stories behind them, fostering a deeper appreciation for the NHS and its dedicated professionals.
