Chichester Volunteer Clive Lucas Wins National Care Award for Dedication
Chichester Volunteer Wins National Care Award

A dedicated volunteer from Chichester has been celebrated on a national stage, receiving a prestigious award in recognition of his unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of care home residents. Clive Lucas, a resident of Selsey, was named the national winner of the Everyday Impact Award by the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) at a glittering ceremony held in Liverpool.

Outshining Nominees Across the Country

Clive triumphed over nominees from care homes nationwide, with the award specifically highlighting individuals who transform daily lives through small, consistent acts of kindness that foster trust and genuine connection. His steadfast dedication to the residents of Lakeview Grange Care Home on Whyke Road in Chichester was the key factor in his success.

A Journey from NHS Social Worker to Cherished Volunteer

Clive, a retired NHS social worker, began his volunteering journey two years ago after previously visiting the care home and feeling compelled to get involved. He started by assisting with falls prevention classes, providing reassurance and support to residents. Since then, his role has expanded significantly.

He now serves as a minibus driver for resident outings, helps at summer fetes and Christmas activities, and has even taken part in a play to entertain residents. Notably, Clive set up and runs Lakeview Grange's Cinema Club, where he selects films with residents and engages in discussions with them afterwards. He has also recently begun taking some male residents to a local Men's Dementia Group.

Praise from Care Home Management

Shaun Matthews, general manager at Lakeview Grange, expressed immense pride in Clive's achievement. He stated, "We are thrilled that Clive has been recognised nationally for selflessly giving up his time to help our residents. His friendly nature, charm, positivity and warmth bring such a lot of pleasure to residents, their families, our team, and local professionals."

Matthews added, "We've noticed that our male residents, in particular, really enjoy having the opportunity for 'blokey banter' with him, about cars, bikes and engines and more - but he is great at connecting with everyone. He is always willing and enthusiastic, and although he was a very experienced social worker, he still embraces our training opportunities and ongoing learning. He thoroughly deserves this award."

Clive's Personal Reflections on the Honour

Commenting on his win, Clive Lucas said, "I was truly grateful to Mary Oliver, wellbeing and lifestyle co-ordinator at Lakeview Grange, for nominating me and, I was ecstatic to win as I've never won an award before! I love volunteering at Lakeview Grange in fact, I think I enjoy volunteering as much as the team and residents enjoy me being there. It has been lovely sharing skills and learning from the residents' experiences. I look forward to more of this in the future."
