Generous donations from local supporters have enabled a regional health charity to purchase hundreds of pounds worth of specialised items for elderly hospital patients. The funding has allowed two mental health wards in Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire to acquire interactive games and therapeutic toys tailored to support older people living with memory loss and dementia.
Equipment Purchased for Wards
Patients on the dedicated wards can now enjoy puzzle sets, magnetic picture boards, and interactive companion pets. These resources have been carefully selected to promote comfort, spark conversation, and provide soothing distraction during hospital stays. The items are specifically designed to meet the needs of those with cognitive impairments.
Occupational Therapist's Perspective
Emma Dobson, OAMH clinical lead occupational therapist, expressed gratitude for the charitable funds that enabled the purchase of these items for Enlli Ward and St Non Ward. She stated: “We’re incredibly grateful that charitable funds have enabled us to purchase these items for Enlli Ward and St Non Ward.” She added: “Each resource has been chosen to promote comfort, connection, reminiscence and positive distraction, helping to enhance the well-being of patients on both wards.”
Dobson elaborated on the specific benefits: “The puzzles include prompt questions to encourage conversation and memory‑sharing. The “Handyman” magnetic picture board can help spark memories, support identity and act as a calming tool when needed. Animal Snap cards provide bright, age‑appropriate images, while the therapeutic companion pets offer soothing, lifelike interaction that many patients find reassuring.”
Community Support
Charity representatives have praised the kindness of local communities for helping fund items that go beyond standard NHS provision. Nicola Llewelyn, head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, commented: “The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda, and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
