Rotherham's 'Woman of Steel' Effie Copley Celebrates 100th Birthday in Style
Effie Copley, a cherished 'Woman of Steel,' marked an incredible milestone this week as she celebrated her 100th birthday with a joyous party at Whiston Hall Care Home in Rotherham. Family members, staff, and fellow residents gathered to honor a woman who has witnessed a century of history, creating a memorable occasion filled with love and celebration.
A Centennial Celebration with Royal Flair
The festivities were highlighted by Effie receiving over 80 birthday cards, including a special message from the King and Queen, alongside greetings from nearby schools, care homes, and community members. She was also presented with flowers and gifts, adding to the day's excitement. Entertainment was provided by singer Keeley May, while the kitchen team served delicious food and a celebratory cake. Guests raised a toast with bubbly, making the event truly festive.
Effie shared her delight, saying, “It was so lovely to celebrate with all my friends and family. We had a great day. I definitely do not feel like I’m 100.”
A Remarkable Life Story
Born on January 28, 1926, Effie's entry into the world was unique, as she was delivered at Rotherham Fire Station due to her father being on shift as a policeman assisting the fire team. Growing up in Greasbrough, she later worked at Sheffield Steelworks for two years during the Second World War, earning her the title 'Woman of Steel.' This honor was commemorated with a monument in Sheffield city centre in 2016.
She remained at the steelworks for an additional two years before moving to the Parkgate Iron and Steel Company for five more years. Reflecting on this period, Effie said, “I really enjoyed my time in both.”
Love, Family, and Longevity
During her time at the steelworks, Effie met Donald Copley at The Mail Coach Pub in Rotherham while out with friends. The couple married on February 1, 1947, the day after her 21st birthday, at St. Mary's Church in Greasbrough, followed by a party at the town hall. Together, they had three children: Janet, Steven, and Peter, along with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Effie emphasized the importance of family, stating, “I enjoy spending time with loved ones. My family is my passion. I am very lucky to have a big family that come to visit me often.” When asked about her secret to a long life, she replied, “Plenty of rest, good food, and good company.”
Heartfelt Tributes from Whiston Hall
Marie Keaveney, activities coordinator at Whiston Hall Care Home, expressed her honor in celebrating this milestone. She said, “We have been so honoured to be able to celebrate this massive milestone with Effie and her family. Effie has lived at Whiston Hall a long time and everyone has been so excited about her birthday. The staff here were delighted to be able to celebrate with Effie.”
