As the UK braces for a major heatwave with temperatures forecast to reach 38C on Thursday, experts are urging households to carry out a simple maintenance task now to help keep their homes cooler. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for intense heat from today until Thursday, with the potential to break records for June temperatures.
Why Cleaning Your Fan Matters
While fans are essential during hot weather, their efficiency depends on proper upkeep. Maria Bullen, a comfort specialist at Dreamland, explains: "Regular cleaning not only ensures your fan operates efficiently, but also extends its lifespan and reduces the risk of dust-related allergies." She advises: "Always turn off and unplug your fan before cleaning, and make sure it's completely cool before you start." A thorough clean removes dust buildup that can hinder airflow and spread allergens.
Other Ways to Cool Your Home
To keep your home cool during the heatwave, block heat from entering during the day and purge trapped hot air at night.
During the Day
- Shut windows and doors: Keep them closed tightly as long as the outside air is hotter than the inside air. This traps cooler overnight air inside.
- Close curtains and blinds: Cover windows before the sun hits them directly, prioritising south- and west-facing rooms.
- Upgrade window coverings: Use thick, light-coloured or thermal-lined blackout curtains to reflect sunlight. Alternatively, apply reflective film to the glass.
- Shade from outside: Hang a light sheet outside windows or drop external awnings to block solar radiation before it hits the glass.
- Minimise internal heat sources: Turn off computers, TVs, and chargers. Switch to LED bulbs and avoid using the oven.
At Night
- Open everything when it cools: Open windows wide after sunset once the outside temperature drops below indoor temperature.
- Create cross-ventilation: Open windows on opposite sides of the house and keep internal doors open to let air move freely.
- Flush heat upstairs: Open highest windows, skylights, or loft hatch at night to let trapped heat escape from upper floors.
- Point fans outward: Place a box fan in an open window facing outwards to push hot indoor air out.
- The ice trick: Place a shallow bowl of ice or frozen water bottles in front of a desk fan to create a chilled mist.
- Set ceiling fans counter-clockwise: Ensure ceiling fans rotate counter-clockwise at high speed to push a refreshing breeze down.
- Run extractor fans: Keep kitchen and bathroom extractors running to pull hot air and humidity out.
- Cool your sleep setup: Swap heavy duvets for a single cotton sheet. Pop pillowcase or socks in the fridge for 30 minutes before bed.
- Target pulse points: Run cold water over wrists or place a damp cloth on the back of your neck.
- Sleep downstairs: In multi-story homes, move mattress to a north-facing, shaded room as lower levels stay cooler.
With temperatures soaring, these simple steps can make a significant difference to your comfort and safety during the heatwave.
