Oxfordshire Dentist Achieves Remarkable Marathon Milestone

An Oxfordshire dentist has completed an extraordinary athletic challenge by finishing all seven World Marathon Majors in just nine months. Niall Hutchinson, aged 61 from Wantage near Oxford, crossed the finish line at the London Marathon this month, marking his seventh major marathon in this impressive timeframe.

Demanding International Schedule

Niall's remarkable journey began last year in Sydney during August 2025, followed by Berlin in September 2025, Chicago in October 2025, and New York in November 2025. He continued his challenge with Tokyo in March 2026 before tackling Boston on April 20th. The London Marathon served as the final race of his series, coming just six days after his Boston marathon completion.

This London Marathon appearance represented his 17th marathon overall, following a demanding international schedule that has taken him across four continents throughout his nine-month challenge.

Transformation from Health Concerns to Marathon Runner

Niall's achievement becomes even more remarkable considering his health background. Just six years ago, he was three stone overweight and received a diagnosis of stage two hypertension. His general practitioner gave him three months to lower his blood pressure or begin medication, as he had not exercised for six or seven years.

"In my mid-50s, when I first tried to run a short two-mile loop near my home, I couldn't even manage a fraction of it," Niall recalled. "I started with tiny distances, just pushing a bit further each day."

His running journey began during a holiday in Dingle, Ireland, where he entered and completed the Dingle Marathon in five hours and forty minutes. When patients and friends offered sponsorship, he chose Smile Train as his charity, aligning closely with his dental profession.

Fundraising for Cleft Care Charity

Niall has set himself an ambitious fundraising target of £10,000 for Smile Train, an organization that supports free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care for children worldwide. This care includes dental treatment, orthodontic services, speech therapy, and nutritional support.

As a dentist, Niall selected Smile Train because he has worked with cleft-affected individuals and witnessed firsthand how cleft conditions impact oral health, speech development, and personal confidence.

"I was never sporty at school. I was the kid who didn't want to run at all," said Niall. "I'm still amazed that I've got here, preparing to finish seven major marathons in nine months. Doing it for Smile Train adds a completely different level of purpose. When training gets tough, I remind myself why I'm doing it and who it's for."

Global Impact of Cleft Conditions

Approximately one in seven hundred babies worldwide are born with a cleft lip and/or palate each year. While the National Health Service provides early treatment and support in the United Kingdom, children in many lower-income countries face years-long waiting periods or never receive care at all.

Without surgical intervention, many children struggle with eating, breathing, and speaking. Smile Train empowers local medical professionals through training, funding, and resources to provide completely free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally.

Charity Leadership Applauds Achievement

Susannah Schaefer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Smile Train, expressed admiration for Niall's accomplishment. "Completing just one marathon is an achievement in itself, but completing seven in nine months is truly remarkable," she stated.

"Every pound raised by Niall will help provide life-changing surgery and ongoing care for children and families around the world. We are very grateful for his commitment and wish him every success in London."

Niall secured his London Marathon place through Smile Train, setting in motion a journey that would eventually lead to completing all World Marathon Majors. His story demonstrates how personal transformation can create significant positive impact for charitable causes.
