Chaddesden Teenager Gains Independence with New Powered Wheelchair
Teenager's Freedom Boosted by Powered Wheelchair Donation

A teenager from Chaddesden is experiencing a significant boost in freedom and autonomy after receiving a powered wheelchair, generously funded by the Children Today Charitable Trust. Seleste Naqvi, aged 19, has been a full-time wheelchair user since she was ten years old due to Spina Bifida, a condition affecting the spine.

Overcoming Mobility Challenges

As Seleste grew older, she found that using a manual or folding electric wheelchair became increasingly exhausting and posed safety risks, especially when navigating steep slopes or uneven surfaces. This limited her ability to move around independently and caused concern for her well-being.

Life-Changing Support

With assistance from Children Today and its partner charities, Seleste was provided with a specially adapted powered wheelchair. She expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I love this chair - it feels safe, and I love that I can go out on my own now. The tilt function and better control make it so much easier to get around."

Her mother, Sarah Naqvi, highlighted the positive impact, noting that Seleste can now independently board buses and safely navigate through town, offering both of them greater peace of mind and reducing daily stresses.

Charity's Mission and Impact

Emma Prescott, the charity director at Children Today, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, saying, "Every child deserves the equipment to live independently and safely. Seleste’s story shows how the right support can transform a young person’s life."

This case underscores the critical role that charitable organizations play in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, providing them with tools to foster independence and confidence.
