West Mercia Police has issued a warning about a surge in holiday rental scams that are costing holidaymakers hundreds of pounds. The scams include fake caravan listings and fraudulent villa bookings, with criminals exploiting the growing online holiday marketplace.
How the Scams Work
Fraudsters use various methods to trick people into handing over money and personal information through fake villa rentals and holiday lets. They often advertise properties at rock-bottom prices to lure unsuspecting victims.
Police Advice
Police urge the public to be suspicious of deals that seem too good to be true. 'If it's at a rock bottom price ask yourself why,' the force advised. Officers recommend doing thorough research before making purchases and reading reviews of websites or sellers. They also suggest verifying property addresses through Google Maps, as details may have been copied from a genuine website.
Booking Safely
The force recommends booking through reputable travel companies that are members of trade bodies such as ABTA, ABTOT or ATOL where possible. For independent bookings, they advise establishing whether you're dealing with property owners, letting agents or tourist information desks.
Police stress the importance of reading terms and conditions carefully and double-checking travel information, particularly for bookings made well in advance. They recommend using secure payment options and credit cards for purchases over £100 for Section 75 protection.
Growing Threat
The warning comes as more people turn to online platforms to book their holidays, creating new opportunities for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting travellers. West Mercia Police issued the alert as part of their weekly economic fraud update.
