A significant fire erupted at a vape shop in a Midland town centre this afternoon, prompting urgent warnings for the public to stay away and leading to the evacuation of nearby businesses.
Firefighters battle intense town centre blaze
The incident began at approximately 1pm on Tuesday, January 13. The fire took hold inside the 'Cloud Town' vape store located on Gaolgate Street in Stafford. Thick, black smoke was seen pouring from the building and rising high into the sky, creating a highly visible plume over the town centre.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded with multiple fire appliances to tackle the inferno. The severity of the situation necessitated the immediate closure of Gaolgate Street, a key thoroughfare situated near a Sainsbury's branch. The road remained shut for several hours while crews worked to bring the fire under control.
Public urged to avoid area as shops evacuated
In response to the developing emergency, shoppers and members of the public were strongly advised to avoid the area around Gaolgate Street. As a precautionary measure, several neighbouring shops were reportedly evacuated to ensure everyone's safety.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service issued a statement shortly after the fire began, confirming their presence and advising the public. "We currently have multiple appliances dealing with a fire at a shop on Gaolgate Street, Stafford," they said. "The road is currently closed as we work to bring the incident to a safe conclusion."
No injuries reported as crews dampen down
Fortunately, the fire service confirmed that no injuries had been reported in connection with the blaze. According to reports from StokeonTrentLive, the fire was fully extinguished by 5pm.
However, fire crews remained at the scene into the evening to conduct a thorough assessment of the building. Their primary concern was to ensure the structure was safe and sound following the intense heat and damage caused by the flames. The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigations are likely to follow.
