Aldi Shares Egg Storage Tips to Reduce Food Waste

Aldi has issued important advice for shoppers on how to store eggs correctly, as the supermarket aims to help consumers cut down on food waste this summer. The discounter has partnered with food waste expert Kate Hall to share top tips.

Proper Egg Storage

Kate Hall emphasized the importance of consistent temperature. She stated: "No one wants to experience the stench of an egg past its best, so to make sure none of yours go to waste, keep them in the original box in the fridge or a cool pantry. It's important that they stay at a consistent temperature rather than in the everchanging temperatures of a home kitchen."

Can You Freeze Eggs?

Yes, you can freeze eggs, according to Hall. She advised: "Make sure you always freeze them on or before the best before date – the fresher the better. You'll need to break them out of the shells first, but eggs can be frozen as whites, yolks (with a pinch of salt or sugar), or combined. If you're freezing the whole egg, always whisk it first as it will be far harder to mix together after defrosting."

She recommends freezing eggs in usable quantities, such as two for an omelette or three for a cake, flat in a labeled freezer bag. This allows for quick defrosting in a dish of cold water. "You can use them for whatever you fancy (as long as they're cooked through), they're just perfect once they're cooked!" she added.

Recipe Ideas

Hall shared a recipe for 'Epic Bread & Butter Pudding' to use up baked goods and frozen eggs. She said: "If you have built up a ridiculous amount of baked goods in your freezer then this one is for you! It's also a great way to use frozen eggs (which not many people realise you can freeze)."

She also suggested banana ice cream, calling it "the perfect demonstration of how we can make an often-wasted food into something delicious." She noted that it can be varied with nut butters, frozen fruit, or chocolate spread, saying: "What could be better than a healthy pudding, with just one 12p ingredient and some sprinkles!?"
