Cleaner's Hack to Banish Musty Kitchen Sink Smells

A professional cleaner has revealed how homeowners can banish stubborn, 'musty' odours from their kitchens for good without spending a fortune on expensive chemicals. The clever method is designed to prevent smelly sink drains from causing a stink in the heart of the home, using just a couple of everyday items often found hiding in your cupboards.

The tip was shared on TikTok by Jason Cleans (@jason.cleans), a professional cleaner, content creator, and founder of Enhanced Cleaning. Jason has amassed a dedicated following on social media, regularly sharing expert cleaning hacks with his 93,000 followers. In one of his recent videos, he explained how kitchen sinks are often the hidden cause of lingering household smells, even in otherwise clean homes.

“If your house is clean but there’s a smell you can’t seem to get rid of, this may be the culprit,” he told viewers. “Kitchen sinks are notorious for being the source of musty smells.”

Why Kitchen Sinks Smell

Jason explained that over time, sink drains collect a build-up of soap scum, food residue, hair and moisture, creating the perfect environment for mould and bacteria to develop. “All of that odour just rises straight back up into your home,” he added.

The Simple Cleaning Routine

To tackle the issue, Jason recommended a simple deep-cleaning routine using boiling water, baking soda and white vinegar. First, he advises pouring boiling water slowly down the drain to help melt grease, loosen soap scum and soften built-up residue.

Next, pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. The mixture will begin to fizz, which helps break down grime and neutralise odours. After leaving it to work for around 10 to 15 minutes, a final flush of boiling water helps clear away any remaining debris.

“Do that around once a month and enjoy a fresher feeling at home,” Jason said.

Low-Cost Alternative to Harsh Chemicals

The method is being praised as a low-cost, accessible solution for households looking to tackle persistent drain smells without harsh chemicals, as it relies on staple cupboard ingredients.
