The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that state pensioners born before June 1960 can receive a bonus worth up to £300 this winter. This payment, known as the Winter Fuel Payment, is designed to help with heating bills for the winter of 2026 to 2027.
Eligibility Criteria
If you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, you may be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. However, you will not qualify if you live outside these regions, were in hospital receiving free treatment for the entire qualifying week (21 to 27 September 2026) and the previous year, or if you were in prison for the whole of that week. Additionally, those who need permission to enter the UK and have a leave that prohibits claiming public funds are excluded.
Automatic Payments
Most eligible individuals will receive the payment automatically from the DWP. If you qualify, a letter will be sent in October or November detailing the amount you will receive. Payments are typically made in November or December 2026. However, if your total income exceeds £35,000, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will reclaim the payment. Your partner's income is not counted towards this threshold.
Payment Amounts
The amount you receive depends on your birth date and circumstances during the qualifying week. Here is a breakdown:
- Living alone or with no eligible person: £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960; £300 if born before 28 September 1946.
- Living with someone who is not eligible for benefits: £100 if both born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960; £100 if you were born between those dates and your housemate was born before 28 September 1946.
- Living with someone who is eligible: £200 if both born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960; £300 if one or both were born before 28 September 1946.
If you live in a care home, you may still receive the payment unless you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or income-related ESA and have lived in the care home since 28 June 2026 or earlier.
Important Notes
The Winter Fuel Payment does not affect other benefits. The qualifying week for winter 2026 to 2027 is 21 to 27 September 2026. If you do not receive a letter by November, contact the DWP to check your eligibility.
