Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of their trip to Aston Villa this weekend. The club has confirmed that midfielder Xavi Simons has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), an injury that will rule him out for the remainder of the season and also cause him to miss the upcoming World Cup.
Simons was stretchered off during Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday after an incident in the second half. The Dutch international later revealed the severity of the knee injury, confirming the devastating news on social media.
Spurs currently sit in the relegation zone despite the win, with West Ham also securing three points against Everton to keep the pressure on. The loss of Simons is a significant setback for manager Roberto De Zerbi as his side prepares for a crucial fixture at Villa Park.
Dominic Solanke also came off during the Wolves match with an apparent muscular problem. De Zerbi confirmed the striker had picked up a muscular issue, but the full extent of the injury remains unclear.
On a more positive note, Tottenham are hopeful of welcoming back Destiny Udogie for the clash against Aston Villa. The full-back missed the trip to Wolves, as did Pape Matar Sarr, who experienced shoulder pain in training last week.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, and Cristian Romero remain sidelined, further depleting Tottenham's squad ahead of a critical period in their fight against relegation.
