Major Health Alert: 50,000 Contaminated Cleansers Recalled in UK
A significant health alert has been issued across the United Kingdom, with authorities urging the public to immediately stop using a specific antimicrobial cleanser. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced a precautionary recall of 50,000 units of Hibiwash antimicrobial wash, manufactured by Mölnlycke Health Care.
Contamination Detected at Production Facility
The recall was initiated following the detection of Burkholderia cepacia contamination at the company's production facility. This bacterial contamination has prompted the withdrawal of three specific batches of the product to prevent potential health risks.
While no patients have reported adverse effects linked to the affected products, the MHRA has classified this as a Class 2 recall, emphasizing it as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Specific Batches Affected
The contaminated products carry the following batch numbers:
- Batch number 5156042
- Batch number 5156043
- Batch number 5156093
Consumers who have Hibiwash in their possession are strongly advised to check their packaging immediately for these batch numbers and discontinue use if matched.
Heightened Risk for Vulnerable Populations
Although most people would experience minimal impact from exposure, certain vulnerable groups face significantly higher risks. Patients living with cystic fibrosis and those on waiting lists for lung transplantation are considered particularly at risk from Burkholderia cepacia contamination.
This bacteria can cause serious respiratory infections in individuals with compromised lung function, making prompt action crucial for these populations.
Official Guidance from Health Authorities
Shareen Doak, Deputy Director of Benefit-Risk Evaluation at the MHRA, provided clear instructions: "If you have Hibiwash, check the packaging for batch numbers 5156042, 5156043 or 5156093 and stop using it. These batches could be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia and should be taken to a pharmacy for safe disposal."
This guidance underscores the importance of proper disposal through pharmaceutical channels to prevent environmental contamination or accidental reuse.
Alternative Products Remain Available
Importantly, alternative chlorhexidine gluconate four per cent washes remain unaffected by this recall. These products continue to be available for patients who require antimicrobial washes for medical purposes, ensuring continuity of care without interruption.
Healthcare providers are advised to recommend these unaffected alternatives to patients who need antimicrobial products, particularly those in high-risk categories.
The MHRA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. Consumers with concerns are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers or local pharmacies for further guidance.
