An independent candidate for Birmingham City Council has reported a harassment campaign targeting his family to the police, vowing not to be intimidated. Paul Smith, who is standing for the Allens Cross ward in Northfield, said malicious emails were sent to his wife and his workplace in what he believes is a politically-motivated attack ahead of the May 7 election.
Candidate Speaks Out
Smith described the situation as "deeply disappointing" and alleged the emails were sent by "someone associated with a political opponent." In a statement on social media, he declared: "I will not let the bullies win. This is not what politics should be about. I'm standing to serve our community with integrity, and I won't be distracted from that." The matter has been reported to both West Midlands Police and city council officials.
Police Investigation Underway
West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating harassment that took place between April 9 and 14. A spokesperson said enquiries are ongoing. The election for the Allens Cross seat was triggered after former councillor Jack Deakin stepped down in December following months of non-attendance at council meetings.
Smith is running as an independent candidate, aiming to represent the community with a focus on integrity and local issues. The harassment has drawn widespread condemnation from local residents and political figures alike, who have expressed support for Smith and his family.
